Climate Change (CC) is one of the most serious problems facing sustainable development (SD) around the world and in Africa particularly. Although developing countries are the least responsible for the phenomenon, they are the most affected by its impacts and vulnerabilities. The impacts of CC could wipe out the progress made in achieving the goals of sustainable development. It has been predicted that land temperature in Africa will rise faster than the global average. The impacts of CC will accentuate the already existing development problems and severe social vulnerabilities in African countries and put the lives of millions of people at risk.
The implementation of international climate agreements by low-income countries and their efforts for transition into low-carbon societies, can result in major disruptions in the development efforts of these countries.
Integration of CC adaptation and mitigation actions into comprehensive SD strategies is essential for effective combating of CC. This meeting will therefore highlight the relationship between CC and SD and explore practical modalities and good practices for mainstreaming climate policy actions into national plans for SD.
The conference will consider how CC policies can be pursued in a manner which is beneficial for social and economic development.
